Cheating and scamming that beset item trading in Diablo

When you buy legendary crests, you're not buying a single roll of dice like the case with a FIFA Ultimate Team card pack, say. You are purchasing a chance to load dice to get into the game engine to tweak the drop rates (slightly) to your advantage. Gambling mechanics that are addictive are not separate from the addictive gameplay mechanics, but instead are tied directly to the combat system and loot drops within the game. Diablo is uniquely well-placed to make this happen. As my colleague Maddy Myers pointed out, these heavily loot-focused games have always been characterized as slot machines and that's what Diablo Immortal's model of business makes an actual.

Blizzard has repeatedly tried to highlight that the game's monetization system can be ignored until the endgame that is the case, and they claim that the majority gamers enjoy playing without spending a dime, which is reasonable. But it's a bit naive to claim that the primary pleasure of Diablo games resides in exploring the story rather than maximizing the power of your character. It's equally untrue to say that these games have been designed to create a hunger for hitting the power limit in the players. If you're a person who has a tendency toward addiction to gambling or to the addictive aspects of Diablo's item game -- or even both -- the legendary Crest system can be exploitative and can be extremely damaging.

For the rest of us it just makes Diablo less fun.

We've been there before or maybe somewhere similar. When Diablo 3 first came out in 2012, it included an auction house with real money in which players could buy and sell their item drops. In theory, this existed in order to avoid the cheating and scamming that beset item trading in Diablo 2. However, in order to direct players toward Auction House, Blizzard reduced the drop rate of loot in the game to such an extent that equipping your character's character turned into a boring grind and the game as a whole felt unrewarding to play. Once the auction house, which was widely criticized, was taken down and drop rate were raised in 2014, Diablo 3 instantly became more fun, even before the innovations of The Reaper of Souls expansion raised it to classic status.
