The Rams won its second Super Bowl title in franchise history and the first since the shift back in Los Angeles in rather dominating fashion, taking down the Bengals, 38-20. This score does not compare to the first half of a shellacking L.A. handed down en-route to a trophy.
After a quiet games in the opening game by both teams, Rams were able to score with a somewhat controversial play. On a third-and-12 situation at on the Cincinnati 34-yard line, Matthew Stafford uncorked a deep ball to Van Jefferson on the left side of the end zone. The officials initially ruled that he had been out of the line of play, but a challenge of Sean McVay led to a change of the ruling and the Rams ascending, 7-0. In full transparency it was not clear that Jefferson had two feet in out of bounds, but virtual officials felt otherwise upon more review (Maybe video games have become more realistic! ).
The Bengals responded to the touchdown drive from the Rams with a score of their own. Joe Burrow completed a pass to Tee Higgins to knot the score at seven, however, L.A. quickly matched that score by driving across the field, and Odell Beckham Jr. scoring a seven-yard touchdown passing making it 14-7.
At this point in the game that the Bengals began to fall by the wind.
The Cincinnati offense took the field following that Beckham touchdown, and was at a third and 9 at their 24-yard line. After rolling out to his right side, Burrow was tackled at by Leonard Floyd and the football came loose. Aaron Donald scooped it up and was able to slam it into the goal line to make the Rams ahead 21-7. In the second quarter, the running back Cam Akers would cap off another scoring effort at L.A. that would extend their lead to three scores.
To their credit, the Bengals did show some fight during the first half amid that scoring barrage by the Rams. They managed to get into the end zone with 50 seconds to go before halftime to cut the gap to 14 after Burrow made contact with Tyler Boyd.
However, in the same vein as the Chiefs who forced overtime against Buffalo after 13 seconds in the final regulation in the Divisional Round the Rams were on the cusp of striking a similar blow. On the first play following the Bengals score and 46 seconds on the clock, Stafford completed a 73-yard touchdown to Jefferson to give L.A. what proved to be an insurmountable lead.
In the second half, the Rams made the most of the ground game while the Bengals offense was sluggish and eventually settled for questionable field goals attempts and ultimately led to the final score of 38-20 in favor in favor of Los Angeles, who become the second team in Super Bowl history to win the game in their home stadium.
Aaron Donald was named Super Bowl MVP after a dominating performance. The defensive lineman of mut 22 coins the year finished the game with 13 total tackles (four tackles for loss) and recovered a fumble for the touchdown.
