Malcolm has been playing RuneScape since he was a kid, and has also played various of the top idle games, including Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. While he enjoyed them, he felt the genre had the potential to do more to make it satisfying in a similar way to Jagex's flagship RPG.

"So I decided to create my own, I had no idea it would even be released, let alone become so well-known," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I tried to create something that was not in the traditional idle game mould with a feature-rich game and offered players actual choice about how they wanted to move forward rather than simply increasing numbers in a continuous cycle.

After toying with this idea bit in the privacy of my own home I started combining ideas and the mechanics of classic MMOs with the popular idle game design, making something that can be played in a casual way, while on the move, and fit it into the daily routine of a gamer."

Melvor adds: "While the numbers and stats isn't something that all players enjoy the most about MMOs It is the one that the majority of fans be drawn to once the exploration is finished. Since it's usually central to what long-term players are focused on it's logical to include this as the primary element of Melvor's game's gameplay design. In addition, it's very compatible with design elements found in many idle games."

Although he drew inspiration from other MMOs, the structure of RuneScape was one that he studied closely, making around the world created by Melvor Idle into a parallel universe with the 20 years old RPG. "RuneScape was a fundamental reference point for the game since it was such an important gameplay for me" says the game's creator."
