World of Warcraft player Fence Macabre created an online protest and fundraiser in-game that took place at Oribos. The sit-in, which started on the 22nd of July, is intended for players who wish gather and protest the alleged unfair treatment of Activision Blizzard employees, with large numbers of players having their subscriptions cancelled or waiting the remainder of their time on current subscriptions. Some may even decide to leave the game they love for good. More players joining the protest and cancelling their subscriptions will be able to do so until "transparent lasting changes" are implemented within the company.
The event also doubles as a fundraiser for Black Girls CODE, a non-profit organization that teaches girls aged 7-17 about digital technology and computer programming to establish more representation in the tech sector across the board. The fundraiser, as of the time of writing, has already raised over $9.000. A majority of Activision's executive leadership is made up of white males, and a charity devoted to diversifying the tech industry seems like an apt choice by World of Warcraft sit-in organizers.
The protest continues and the company's founders are inviting players to participate regardless of whether they're comfortable having to end their subscriptions to this game. What makes this protest powerful is not only it's been widely reported within such a short period length of time. It's also it is that anyone can join and voice their displeasure at the actions of the company regardless of where they live.
A cancellation of subscriptions might be a successful way to initiate change at the billion-dollar company, since perceptions of Activision Blizzard focus on profits over employee wellbeing has always been a hot-button issue within gamers. While the outcome of the lawsuit is unclear, World of Warcraft players are demanding that the company accept some responsibility and implement the long-overdue changes.
