Fine metal recovery is one of the most difficult challenges in Incineration Bottom Ash (IBA) recycling.
IBA contains not only large pieces of iron and aluminum, but also small aluminum fragments, copper particles and other valuable metals mixed with fine ash and mineral materials.
These fine metals are much more difficult to recover because their small size and irregular shape can reduce separation efficiency. As a result, a considerable amount of valuable metal may remain in fine fractions or leave the system with tailings.
Why Do Fine Metals Get Lost?
There are several common reasons:
1. Small particle size
Fine aluminum and copper particles are more difficult to separate than larger metal pieces.
2. Mixed particle sizes
When coarse and fine materials enter the same separation stage, their different trajectories can affect separation performance.
3. Fine ash contamination
Metal particles may be covered or mixed with ash, making effective separation more difficult.
4. Single-stage separation
A single sorting stage may recover the majority of easily accessible metals, but some valuable fine particles can remain in the intermediate or tailing streams.
How Can Fine Metal Recovery Be Improved?
A better approach is to treat fine fractions separately rather than processing all IBA in exactly the same way.
A practical strategy can include:
Screening → Fine Fraction Classification → Fine Metal Separation → Secondary Recovery
Fine-particle eddy current separation can be considered for suitable non-ferrous fractions, while additional density-based separation may provide another recovery opportunity for selected fine materials.
The key is not simply to add more equipment. The recovery system should be designed around particle size, material composition and the target metal.
The Bigger Picture
Improving IBA metal recovery is not only about recovering more metal. It is also about reducing valuable material losses from the entire process.
Better particle classification, appropriate separation technology and secondary recovery can help recycling plants capture more valuable resources from every ton of IBA.
In IBA recycling, the metals that are easiest to recover are only part of the opportunity. The real challenge is recovering the valuable metals that remain in the fine fraction.
